History and Details
The country house Astei is situated on a mountain side which overlooks the Bay of Biscay. Astei, also known as Asteguia, means oak grove.
After analysing and studying the materials used in the construction of the house, we can say that the house was most probably built in the end of the 15th century. According to the real estate registry of the time however, the house was inscribed in the year 1641.
The original construction with a chestnut framework was substituted in the 17th century with a stone façade where you can appreciate a marvellous arch made of limestone. This singular characteristic is very common in Basque country houses.
Astei was originally designed as a residence for its owners and animals including room for keeping tools needed to work the land. Since 1974, the actual owners have carried out various activities such as cattle raising for the production of milk, the restoration and sale of antiques, and finally as a rural house where you can spend your holidays in a wonderful and unforgettable way.
