Cathedral of Palencia, free visit
Palencia (Palencia), Palencia
VERY IMPORTANT: The cathedral will remain under restoration throughout the year 2019, so parts of it might not be seeable during the visit depending on the time of year.
----------------------------------------------------------
It is a cathedral of great proportions: 130 meters long, with a width of 50 meters in the transept, and even more for the cloister and chapter house. The apse is 43 meters high. It is dedicated to San Antolin Martyr, patron of Palencia, part of whose relics it conserves. It is one of the most important resources to visit in Palencia.

In the site where the crypt and the Cathedral of Palencia are now, there existed in antiquity a temple of pagan worship. It would have been then into a Paleo-Christian temple of Roman times, a fact that seems to match the Roman traces existing on the outside at the same level. The oldest vestige of worship that is preserved today is the bottom of the crypt, a building dating from the middle of the seventh century. The remains of Antolin, noble Gallo-Visigoth, saint and martyr, would have arrived in Spain in the courtship of King Wamba from Narbonne in the year 673.

An off-center arc connects the Visigothic underground space with the Romanesque extension, with an exit to the center of the apse.
