| | | You come to Minorca, with his(her, your) almost untouched, virgin atmosphere; as if in these localities of cordial peoples and transparent waters, the clock had stopped in a strange propitious magic to rest. The past is still still alive(vivacious) in this city, since every episode of his(her, your) history is recognized in his(her, your) streets.
The city was conquered by the power of the Vandal ones and, later, incorporated into the Byzantine Empire. In the 7th century the Muslims began to devastate it, though the total occupation did not take place(was not produced) up to beginnings of the 10th century
During the Moslem domination the Medina Minurka happened to be named Ciutadella, which was the former capital of the island until in 1722 Richard Kane moved Maó the courts and the administrative agencies. The French domination restored(established) a cultural current of a lot of importance that made way to the commanding ideas in Europe. The stage of Spanish domain(control) that happened to the second English domination will make possible to realize a former desire of the city: to re-restore(re-establish) the own(proper) bishopric.
His(Her,Your) old town is a small city strengthened, the Moslem presence demonstrates in the labyrinthine alleys that they go out from the Plaça d'es Born, inside the walls of the Moorish city.
Wide and lordly, the square(seat) is dominated by an obelisk constructed in the middle of last century, which remembers(reminds) the assault of the Turkish fleet in 1558 and the sacrifice of the inhabitants, dead men or turned into slaves. We meet also the Town hall, a palace emblem of the power, the Teatre des Born and the lordly Palaces Salort, Vivó and Tower Saura of neoclassic style property of the former nobility that still(yet) is still in force in the current society.
From the Plaça del Born there are born the streets that enter the old town, which they take to us to impressive Catedral of the 14th century raised on a former Arabic mosque. From this point constant architectural surprises are arising as the Església del Roser or the Palau Saura, turned both in rooms of exhibitions. After contemplating so many beauty, we enter Ses Voltes, across the characteristic porticoes, a point of reference where to walk calmly and to visit the trades of the zone. During the itinerary an image will call powerfully the attention of the visitor: a sculpture
of bronze of a lamb that does allusion to Sant Joan's holidays(parties).
Celebrating one of the most spectacular traditional holidays(parties) of the country, on the 23rd and 24th of June, Ciutadella explodes of happiness with the celebrations in honor to the Holy Boss. A holiday(party) in which the horse is the protagonist, by means of a few equestrian popular games that follow(continue) the rituals established from the Middle Ages. The whole expression of happiness of a people(village) that opens his(her, your) houses and his(her, your) hearts the visitor.
Ciutadella since(as,like) sedate episcopal of the island, it(he,she) continues showing us manifestations of his(her, your) character in the convent of Santa Clara, the precious(beautiful) Església del Sant Crist. As well as the Seminar, with his(her, your) Museum Diocesà and his(her, your) singular cloister
The city offers as a good site(place) to relax also, in some terrace of his(her, your) numerous squares(seats), or to know his(her, your) centers of crafts. Mention deserves separate Ciutadella's charming port, a magic place where to taste the typical seaworthy(sea) kitchen(cuisine) of the island or to live the night in the terraces with a view to the sea of the Pla de Sant Joan | | |
