| | | ORIGINALITY CONSISTS IN RETURNING TO THE ORIGIN
(Gaudí)
Posadanostra perhaps isn't the grandest mansion in Ribera del Fresno, Badajoz, nor is it perhaps the prettiest. But it is Nostra. And we would also like it to be Vostra. Just as it has been to those who have lived here since it was built back in 1781.
Part of the heritage of a hard-working village of conquistadors in the region of Tierra de Barros, this mansion's history spans from the days of Meléndez Valdés and Isaac Peral to the modernism of the early 20th century.
Today, it retains its baroque-Manueline features (the facade and stairways, the vaulted ceilings and floors, the archways and walls, and the doors and windows), whilst also incorporating modern features to ensure the comfort of our guests. The house's furnishings and facilities (including central heating, air conditioning, Wi-Fi Internet connection, and toilet facilities for people with disabilities), its peaceful and quiet atmosphere, and the food we prepare, all help you to savour your time here, to unwind and to take things at a more relaxed pace. Our philosophy and outlook is one of "slow".
On entering through the front door, you step back in time to the days of the conquistadors who, after returning from the Americas, received a palace and a title from the king in reward for their heroic deeds.
Whilst sleeping or eating in its rooms, you will come to experience a balanced, rather than over-the-top, approach to the modern; something that brings peace to those who seek it, but which also satisfies the appetite and curiosity of the restless traveller, who decides to stop by.
Returning to the origin. That's where originality lies. That's where you will find Nostra diferencia.
ROOMS
Angela is the bedroom with the most flavour in the whole house. It couldn't be put better, as far as all the five senses go, because all the senses, not only taste, used to be aroused in the old kitchen-in the great fireplace (el topetón).
All the secrets were locked away in here.
Life was cooked up, and time was burnt away.
It was the heart of the house-the hearth. Today, it is the cosiest room and the most original in terms of character.
Magdalena is the biggest of the four, but also the most introverted. It goes almost unnoticed, but its inside charming, spacious and beautiful. You will feel just as at home here as baby chicks do with their mother hen.
It adapts itself easily to any kind of atmosphere, and its comfortable space will come to feel like your own.
It is the most suitable room for a family.
Annamaria, bright and welcoming, has its own individual style. Situated at the back of the courtyard, it is a cheery, fresh and open window to the outside. It transmits a feeling of serenity and sweetness and, calmly, from a corner of the house, contemplates inwardly and while dreaming of the outside. It was the last one, the lost sheep, it is instead the first of the flock. It was the little one, the forgotten one, but it is instead the lovely of the house.
Rosaria is the little one, but stands out from all the others, and watches over them from the centre of the courtyard like a guardian angel. Generous and peaceful, bright and cheerful like a rose in its garden, it is now the youthful spirit of the old house, its most extrovert occupant, but at the same time the most intimate and reserved. At times distant, yet nearly always close by.
Hospedería
The front doors, made of fine wood from the Americas, led to the main hallway of the house. Sloping downwards from the front doors, the de rollo floor (a carpet of rounded river stones, embedded in the floor) is the only remaining trace of the livestock that also used to pass through here.
Over the years, this main hallway saw life's comings and goings; the rooms of the house were laid out around it, and its joys and sorrows lived out along with it. At the bottom, through the glass doors, the courtyard awaited. The staircase led you upwards to enjoy a beautiful sunset or to dream of the full moon.
Today, the communal areas of the posada are gathered around this main hallway: the lounge, the breakfast room, the bar/reception, and the way up to a lovely sun terrace. From the sun terrace you can see storks and kestrels above the church and the hills of olive trees.
The courtyard still reflects the vitality that the house once had. It led to the stables, the dovecot, the well, and to the cellar-where sausages were cured in the chacinero, and where the wine was stored. The children used to play singing games here, standing in a ring under the shade of the palm trees, whilst the adults crushed olives, sheared the sheep, prepared the sausages after the slaughter, or simply remained outside in the fresh air, smelling the scent of the jasmine and listening to the sound of the church bells under the clear Extremaduran sky.
Today, its peace and quiet or its birdsong, and its sun and its shade, are for the exclusive enjoyment of Posadanostra's guests and set the scene for occasional food and wine events.
Trattoria
The dining rooms retain the splendour of times gone by in their frescos and stuccowork; at the same time the dishes served here maintain the simplicity of an inn or trattoria. Here, up to 50 guests can once again experience the almost forgotten smells and flavours of traditional Extremaduran and Italian (from Abruzzo) home cooking. There are two menus, one basic and the other degustation, frequently changing according to the season and the local market, and always prepared with finest quality natural products.
The food we offer is for those with time, good appetite and who come with a healthy degree of curiosity. It is cooked over a low heat so that you can take your time in savouring a part of our heritage. It's also a sure bet with the wines, D.O. Ribera del Guadiana and D.O.C. Abruzzo, old and unknown, but a pleasant surprise for the palate.
The salón de los Frescos is reserved for non-smokers, and the sala Isaac Peral for groups of up to 12 people.
The rediscovery of the pleasures of taking your time whilst eating and of mealtime conversation, education of the palate, and the use of good, clean and fair trade food, are values promoted by the Slow Food movement (slowfood.com) and held by us at Posadanostra.
"What we eat has a profound effect on our environment, the rural landscape, the survival of traditions and on the Earth's biodiversity."
(C. Petrini, founder of Slow Food)
