It's possible to visit some of the original mines on site. Declared an area of National Cultural Interest. Defenses of the Cenizas Where Calblanque Regional Par Why recommended: The Cenizas battle defenses are to be found around Mount Cenizas, close to Portman in the Regional Park of Calblanque, Cartagena. The area has a very interesting history. Because of the need to defend the shipbuilding and military port of Cartagena from attacks from the sea the defense forts and bunkers where built along the coast between the 18th and beginning of the 20th century, many in the original Spanish fortified style and others in bunker style for cannons. Some of them still conserve the 18th century canons. There are in total 18 coastal defence points on the hill, some of them preserved as historic momunments and some being used still today as light proyectors in anti aircraft defense. The present day fortification was built in 1931 on the site of an original 18th century fort. It is neoclassic in style and has a grand mayan - toltecian entrance arch. There are several buildings in the interior all of which can be visited and the most impressive sight of the visit is the Vickers Canon pointing out to the Mediterranean sea, with it's 18.6 metres length and 35,000 metres reach! The site is well documented with information for visitors and obviously the great views on such a key defensive position are something to be greatly appreciated! Declared as a historical heritage site under Spanish law in 1949.
