| | | | | | | Polop de la Marina barony is one of the most interesting tourist offers on the Costa Blanca coast, due to its outstanding scenery and special microclimate with an average temperature of 17 degrees Celsius, combined with its welcoming people and its past full of history and legend.
It is an oasis of peace only a few kilometres away from the busy coast that lies between the Bernia and Puig Campagna mountain ranges.
If you take the Terra Mítica exit on the motorway, as you go round the corner after the town of La Nucia, you will be surprised by the unmistakable, outstanding view of the white harbour. It is set in an oasis among several tones of green at the foot of Mount Ponoch, also known as the León Dormido or Sleeping Lion (a name given to it by the writer Gabriel Miró).
You will approach the town surrounded by fruit trees. As you enter its streets, you will see traces of their past. Like the rest of the Marina region, the town was a strategic site where the legendary leader Al-Zaraq rose up against Jaime I after the Spanish king conquered the town.
You can try our local cuisine: pilotes de farina de dacsa (large meatballs wrapped in cabbage leaves), stuffed cocas or pies, wheat stew, mintxos (Swiss chard pasties), pebreretes en sangacho (a kind of ratatouille) and arròs en fressols i naps (a rice dish with green beans). There are also typical desserts, such as medlars, traditional pastries and handmade honey of all kinds of flavours.
Sights not to be missed include the parish church, built in 1723; Divina Aurora Shrine, a Way of the Cross with 18th century ceramics; the remains of the old fortress defensive walls; Moorish archaeological remains; traces of Iberian remains and, of course, the Museo del Alambre (Wire Museum).
You can also cool off at Fuente de la Provincia fountain, which has 221 spouts fed by pure spring water, one for each town in the province.
The scenery and tranquillity will invite you to go for a walk, paint, take pictures and explore the vicinity. You will discover some very interesting places: Font d´El Garrofet and Fuentes de los Chorros natural springs, Molí de Xirles, Cueva del Cid Campeador (the cave of Spanish military leader and national hero El Cid), and Mount Ponoch, with the Matet and Umbría pine groves | | |
