Nace en La Nalona, en el puerto de Tarna (Caso (Asturias)) y desemboca en San Esteban de Pravia, después de haberse unido al Narcea en Forcinas (Pravia) y formar la llamada ría de Pravia (En los mapas más antiguos ya figura con este nombre).
En su cuenca se halla una importante reserva de carbón, explotada principalmente en el concejo de Langreo.
